Why I love my iPod.

Hugh, The Maze Master
Hugh's Reviews
Each week Hugh reviews something, anything really, that has provoked a thoughtful insight.

I love my iPod, but I seldom listen to music. I listen to Podcasts.

Podcasts shift time in your favor. A podcast is a program, recorded on computer and shared through the Internet, typically through Apple Computer's iTunes web site.

As a user, you subscribe to the podcast that is delivered directly to your iPod. You can listen to the podcast whenever you like.

Podcasts run the gamut of topics from entertainment to politics to self-help to education. There are a lot of worthless podcasts, but there are great podcasts to be found.

With the good ones, I can give myself the equivalent of a Master’s Degree and get a positive mental boost in the process. The total cost? About $150 for the iPod, the podcasts are FREE.

To connect your iPod to these podcasts, go to iTunes.com to download the software or just open iTunes on your computer, click on the podcast link or type these titles into the search bar. You can even listen on your computer if you do not have an iPod.

Here are links to some of my favorites:

Harvard Business Ideacast- Focuses on big-picture ideas from the current business environment.

Book Digest: Summarizing business books for busy business leaders in eight minutes or less. – Nice way to get the gist of books you may never get to read.

Scientific American Podcast – I love science and brain-stretching concepts. It’s great for opening your mind and keeping in touch with a different industry.

60-Second Psych – Bite-sized chunks of information from the psychology field. If you’re marketing your products, you use psychology every day.

Marketplace from American Public Media – The best economic show for real people.

NPR Technology Podcast – I’m a techy nerd anyway, but this is a nice overview of current technology.

NPR Science Podcast – I love science and this always has a nice connection to real life, not merely theoretical science.

Philosopher’s Notes: Get your Wisdom On. – Philosophy with a down to earth presentation. The host summarizes a theme from one of the great philosophers and connects it to everyday life.

Jeffery Gitomer’s Sales Rant
– Jeffery is a kick-in-your-pants sales trainer who’s full-accountability style I just love. We’re all in sales and he makes self-improvement fun.

I also have a number of church preachers I like, but we’ll keep it secular. Just know that whatever your faith, there are thousands of choices.

So, why bother with podcasts? Is it just another thing to do? Your ears are an important gateway to you mind. As you run, drive, plant, plow, harvest, your ears are listening. If you fill your head with information, positive thinking, and new ideas you are using your time to improve your mind.

My favorite places to listen are on the lawn mower (with my noise-cancelling headphones), as I workout, and when I travel. I’m using that time that would otherwise be lost to the same old radio songs to pump my mind full of new information and new ideas.

This week load your iPod with ideas and positive messages. Email me and tell me if you find new, great podcasts. Email me and tell me if you feel different after a week of positive messaging. Email me if you try it and think it’s baloney.

Podcasts are giving me my Master’s Degree and keeping me positive and motivated for less than $150. Can you think of a better investment for your well-being?

PS I use an iPod Nano. A very affordable, very compact iPod, you can find here.

PPS The Maze Master Podcast is also up and running. Search for “The Maze Master” in iTunes. I’ll officially launch it next week. Have Fun!
